Caravan retailer buffeted by debt
By Michael Kavanagh Financial Times
Published:
Caravan and motor home enthusiasts are a hardy breed. But wet weather and economic gloom will have tested the humour of investors in Discover Leisure, the market-leading caravan retailer, in recent months. Shares in the Aim-listed company have lost more than 90 per cent in the past year, closing down at 2p yesterday. Then, in a profit warning this week, the company said it was facing reduced demand and higher interest charges. Debt levels have grown to £22m compared with £11m a year ago - largely as a result of increased stock resulting from acquisitions, its push into motorhome sales and the launch of a rental service. Company broker Panmure Gordon has cut its profit forecast for the year from £2m to £500,000. But any stock or debt provisions could push post-exceptional figures into the red. Existing stockholders may have seen the worst and want to hold. For others, Discover is one strictly for brave enthusiasts.
Late-night yobs target campervan in Chichester

West Sussex Gazette.
A pain and injury specialist is counting the cost after yobs ran up his campervan bonnet and booted the windscreen in a late-night attack. Anthony Cropley, who owns Chichester Pain Clinic in Chapel Street, Chichester, awoke to find the damage to his VW campervan which cost him hundreds of pounds to repair.
And the attack meant he could not rush to Worthing Hospital to meet his first grandson, Alfie Mark, who was born the previous night.
"It looked like someone ran up my bonnet and kicked in the windscreen and had a go at my wing mirror, too," the 58-year-old said.
This is not the first time Mr Cropley, of Chapel Street, has suffered at the hands of vandals. Since moving to the bungalow he shares with his partner Penny Forshaw last month, he has noticed a regular pattern of vandalism every other Friday night.
"I moved from West Stoke to be closer to my work in Chapel Street. It is a nice, quiet neighbourhood where most people are in their 70s, 80s and 90s," Mr Cropley said. "But the second Friday I was here I noticed someone had tried to pull the wing mirror off my campervan and some others had been damaged.
"Then my windscreen was smashed and my wing mirror damaged along with two other wing mirrors around the corner."District performance sergeant Anna Gent said an investigation had been launched into the vandalism. And she encouraged other residents in the area who had also had property damaged by vandals to report it.
"Police are aware of the fact this is a route back from the city and we will be doing our best to identify who these youths are to see if they are linked to the damage," Sgt Gent said.

Slithering surprise found in high-end motor home
By Susan Brittingham - McAlester news
Features Editor
Red-tailed boa constrictors can be found in Mexico, South America, and downtown McAlester.
Yes, downtown McAlester.
Well, actually, there was only one red-tailed boa constrictor found in downtown McAlester Tuesday, but isn’t that enough?
Grace Wallace sure thinks so, and after finding a 4-foot long one in her motor home, she’s probably the local expert on how many boa constrictors should be found in downtown McAlester.
“One was plenty,” she said, her eyes still peering around in case the boa had a girlfriend (or cousin or even a mommy, who knows?) still in the motor home. “I’ve never been afraid of snakes, but the older I get, the less I like them.”
The story of how Wallace discovered the boa constrictor in her motor home can turn the blood cold — rather apt, since snakes are cold blooded creatures.
“We had been gone for about four days when I came back to the motor home,” she said. “I kept hearing a beeping sound, and I started investigating on this table where I keep the phone. I noticed that the phone had been knocked off the cradle. That beeping sound was the phone. When I looked closer, I saw something that looked like a very pretty scarf. But I got to thinking ‘Now why would I have put a scarf there?’”
Wallace also got to thinking about how she doesn’t own a scarf with that kind of unique, “quite lovely” design on it. “I reached out and touched it, and that’s when I realized it didn’t feel like fabric.
“I knew right away that it was a snake, so I ran outside, got my cell phone and called my husband, Bob.”
Grinning, she said Bob Wallace thought his wife was kidding about finding a snake — again. “I was raised in the country and there were always rattlesnakes around,” she said.
“I wasn’t scared of them. Then, when I got a little older I got bit by a copperhead. And then, one day when I was grown I went to get in my car and there was a grass snake in it.
“After all of that, I know a snake when I see one, and this was definitely a snake.”
Bob Wallace raced to the motorhome while his wife, worried that the boa would get loose and be hard to find, stood guard on the inside steps and trained the bright beam of a flashlight on the reptile.
“My husband was amazed when he got here,” Grace Wallace said a few hours later as she and her grandson, Collin Williams, discussed the red-tailed boa constrictor while they sat in the snake-free motor home.
“I thought they were kidding me when they called and told me about it,” Williams said. “But then I got to thinking about it, and I knew they’d never call me away from work unless it was important, so I raced over here.
“What I saw — a boa constrictor in my grandparents’ motorhome — just floored me.”
The Wallaces called for backup, and soon “An animal control officer was here,” Williams said, adding that it took two tries to get the reptile untangled from its hiding (vantage?) point. “The snake was entangled in the lamp’s power cord. It took a while to get him untangled, and then my grandmother handed the animal control officer a pillowcase to put the snake in. It was unreal.”
Grace Wallace said that what’s really, really unreal is the fact that she passed by that snake an untold number of times, bringing in groceries and clothes. “I am just so glad it didn’t bite me,” she said. “I mean, I actually touched it, and it didn’t bite me. That leads me to think it’s someone’s pet.
“I’ll just bet someone will read the story or see the picture and say ‘Oh, my snake. You’ve got my snake.’”
Anyone missing a red-tailed boa constrictor can call the police department at 423-1212 and ask for the animal control officer.
After all, Grace Wallace said it’s a pretty snake, and since it didn’t bite her, it can’t be all bad.
“If ever there was a pretty snake, it was a pretty snake,” Grace Wallace said.
“But that doesn’t mean I want it in my motor home — or anywhere around me for that matter.
“I am so glad it didn’t bite me, all those times I walk

From the Birmingham Mail
THERE may never be a better time to buy a motorhome!

The Chancellor’s VAT cut has already helped to make prices even more competitive, while manufacturers focus on producing new downturn-defying models for next year.
The market leader, Swift Group, says their motorhomes will now cost between £632 and £1,338 less depending on the model while Auto-Sleepers has reduced prices by around £1,000. All the manufacturers are also absorbing some price rises from their base vehicle suppliers.
New affordable motorhomes will also play their part – AutoTrail were ahead of the game with their highly acclaimed Excel value-for-money range launched in October at the Caravan and Motorhome Show. Lunar Caravans reported their motorhome sales were also strong, led by their new Ford Transit-based Pinnacle over-cab compact coachbuilt.
Swift has just announced its affordable range, the Escape. There are four variations of this entry level coachbuilt where prices start at around £30,000. There are three, four and six berth high line vehicles and a four berth low-line all based on the Fiat Ducato 100psi Multijet engine. The specification includes full kitchen and shower room, plenty of storage, double glazing and central heating. Externally, the vehicles have dark blue cabs with white habitation bodies and stylish graphics. Swift’s first entry level vehicle, the Escape, will make its debut at the season’s curtain raiser, the Boat Caravan and Leisure Show from February 19th-24th at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Auto-Sleepers, whose November sales this year exceeded last year’s, also plan to launch two new vehicles at the show – a compact coachbuilt and what they say will be a revolutionary new campervan.
Also new will be the Compass Avantgarde 155 and Elddis Autoquest 155 models. An entirely new layout is promised with these new two-berth lo-line vehicles boasting a fixed double bed and front dinette.
Looking ahead, the Motorhome Information Service says the motorhome market will have to weather the storm like everyone else. A spokesman said: “People want to enjoy motorhomes and in the slowdown it may be that there is no better way of getting great value leisure. Besides the crunch busting new models, there’s plenty of interest in second hand vehicles which are selling well. “Looking ahead to next year, the two user clubs say they expect bookings to continue to go up, as people look for the ‘stay at home’ option and the best value they can get for their

Rapido 2009 motorhomes
Rapido has published 2009 models and there are several new layouts available.

Rapido provides EFOY fuel cell as a standard equipment in selected motorhome models in 2009. Integrated 9009Dfh and the whole 9MH line-up will receive fuel cells. All the models will get the most powerful EFOY 1600 device. It can produce 1600 Wh (130 Ah) charging per day. This means that the charging current is 5.4 Amps.
EFOY fuel cells use methanol as a fuel. The consumption is 1.1 l/kWh. The devices operate automatically to ensure that the battery is always full.
EFOY 1600 is available also as an option for all C class models of 70 series and all class A models of 9M series. Rapido will pre-equip the vehicles, so that it is easy to add a fuel cell later. Fuelcelltoday.com
